Message from the Department Head
Every academic department of pathology - including the Department of Pathology at UIC - aspires to scholarship and excellence in clinical practice, teaching and research. Even so, UIC Pathology is different by design.
One of the most rapidly growing academic units in the United States, our Department has attracted more than 35 new faculty members from premier institutions over the last six years. These talented individuals have bonded to build an academic community that has been described as a "greenhouse for careers." We work very hard to maintain a nurturing academic environment that is designed to allow everyone - staff, medical students, residents and fellows, practicing pathologists, and researchers - to achieve as much potential as possible. For example, our faculty members transform themselves into students each month to learn innovative and effective methods to teach pathology, serve as role models and mentors, and provide for an educational experience that our medical students consistently rank as the best teaching in the first two years of the entire UIC Medical School curriculum.
UIC is the largest university in Chicago, and our College of Medicine is among the most diverse in the United States, graduating more physicians from under-represented minorities than any other school except for those dedicated to minority physician education. Our Department is diverse: women represent half of our faculty and half of the Division Directors.
Our Department shares UIC's vision of "access to excellence", not only for the students whom we teach but also for the patients and their physicians whom we serve by providing state-of-the-art laboratory services. Our reference laboratory system serves not only the entire State of Illinois, but provides laboratory testing for facilities in 37 states.
The UIC Department of Pathology helps to integrate research throughout the College of Medicine and the other Health Science Colleges through a novel Division of Transdisciplinary Pathology. The major research theme of the Department's new Research Division represents a unique fusion of molecular epidemiology and pathology. This bench-to-bedside approach enables practicing pathologists and pathologists in training to engage in novel approaches to disease prevention and treatment. If you are still wondering how the UIC Pathology Department is different, then consider the fact that multiple federally-funded investigator initiated clinical trials operate from within our Department.
I welcome you personally to this website, and I hope that whatever your interests, you find something at UIC Pathology that is fascinating and that captures your imagination.
